Once you get started
Weekend nights early 1975. Me, Nelson, Kathi, & Willie would pile into either Nelson’s or my mother’s Ford Pinto and head out to the parties out at MSU.1 Typically Ted, Gary, Billy, and Iceberg would meet up with us out there along with a few other members of our crowd and we’d spend those nights dancing away. Although still in high school we had the right connections and transportation to get us to the parties where the college kids hung out so we abandoned the high school house parties for the real party people.
The Ohio Players,2 BT Express,3 Gil Scott Heron,4 and LaBelle5 were just a few of artists who had hits back them blaring from the DJ table as we partied hardy on the dance floor ’til close to morning. Rufus featuring Chaka Khan was one of those hot acts that we would dance to and we always knew the party done got started when the hit single “Once You Get Started”6 from their album “Rufusized”7 hit the turntable.
Just so that you’ll know what I’m talkin’ about I’ve included the album below. Now if you’ll excuse me I need to go pick out my ‘fro so I look right ’cause I’m about to tear up the dance floor. It’s party time people!
