The viewer takes our work and re-creates it in the lexicon of their own experiences. The medium is not the screen the image is shown on, or the paper it’s printed on. The medium is the world of the viewer. They will see things in our work that we didn’t put there, and they will miss things we did.
The Backstage Project is a display of the derrière from an artistic perspective by a collective of photo artists. A picture gallery of creative takes on the concept that the posterior is art even when only a bum view.
So if you don’t mind fine art nudes, I extend to you this invitation to visit the Backstage Project and experience a unique rear view.
Dedicated to a dear friend;
Having felt the same emotions, asked the same questions, I present the above image with emphasis on the thoughts behind it. It recalls a song by Tears For Fears which, for me, expresses the feeling and asks the questions.
This blog post is a response to my blog entry “Admittedly I’m biased towards who I want to want to create art with” sent to me in an email from my friend Ginger Hansel “Sinner.”
I am/was a product of my environment.
I grew up believing I was never going to live up to anyone?s expectations of beautiful unless I had big boobs, perfect body ratio, brown or blond hair, perfect teeth and silky, smooth, ?unblemished? skin.
I did not see beautiful outside of what I was told all my life is beautiful. Cindy Crawford, Nikki Taylor, Heather Locklear. Yes, I?m really aging myself here?heh. They were beautiful. Not me, a skinny knobby kneed redhead with ?dirty spots? on my skin and white eyelashes/eyebrows. I was told by several people in my late teens I should be a model. I never took them seriously. How could they possibly think I was model material? Me? I did not fit the image of a model.
When people of my race are able to see themselves in the full picture of life we are better able to grasp the full concept of life and stop settling for the table scraps that we’ve been given. That’s the motive behind my desire to have my race of people resoundingly represented in my art.
